Phonotactics as phonology: Knowledge of a complex constraint in Dutch
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Dutch lexicon contains very few sequences of a long vowel followed by a consonant cluster, where the second member of the cluster is a non-coronal. We provide experimental evidence that Dutch speakers have implicit knowledge of this gap, which cannot be reduced to the probability of segmental sequences or to word-likeness as measured by neighborhood density. The experiment also shows that the ill-formedness of this sequence is mediated by syllable structure: it has a weaker effect on judgments when the last consonant begins a new syllable. We provide an account in terms of Hayes and Wilson’s Maximum Entropy model of phonotactics, using constraints that go beyond the complexity permitted by their model of constraint induction.

A core area of phonology is the study of phonotactics, or how sounds are linearly combined. Recent cross-linguistic analyses have shown that the phonology determines not only phonotactics but also the articulatory coordination or timing of adjacent sounds. In this article, I explore how the relation between coordination and phonotactics affects speakers producing nonnative sequences. Recent exp...

Similarity and Frequency in Phonology Stefan Frisch This thesis focuses upon parallels between phonology and phonological processing. I study phonological speech errors and a phonotactic dissimilarity constraint, demonstrating they have analogous similarity and frequency effects. In addition, I show that abstract phonological constraints are influenced by the phonological encoding of lexical it...

The study of phonotactics (e.g., the ability of English speakers to distinguish possible words like blick from impossible words like *bnick) is a central topic in phonology. We propose a theory of phonotactic grammars and a learning algorithm that constructs such grammars from positive evidence. Our grammars consist of constraints that are assigned numerical weights according to the principle o...

Clusters are described by phonotactics, which determines phonological conditions and constraints on the occurrence or co-occurrence of sounds in a given language (e.g., [pstr-] in Polish pstrąg ‘trout’, [-ps] in English lapse). Syllables, morphemes or words serve as domains of phonotactics. However, the functions of phonotactics – to achieve easily pronounceable and perceptable sequences – may ...
